"BBQ-ing Britain"

Synopsis
“BBQ'ing Britain” is the title of a cooking program as part of a university degree piece. It will be, for now, one episode a part of a fictional show. Due to the time restraints of the project brief, we can only make one episode. Each episode will be longer than 15 minutes, the purpose of which is to show that BBQ-ing can be easy and quick, but still produce amazing results. The show will follow a chef travelling around Britain, making dishes that represent the area he is in. It will focus on local traditions and how to use them in a 21st century life.

The episode

The location is outside, with a view of the entire Swansea bay, where you can see from Port Talbot all the way to Mumbles Pier. We will have two workbenches for the chef to work on, which will be filled with all the necessary equipment. In addition you'll see fresh spice plants and Welsh daffodils as decorations. After seeing the chef prepare the meal, all the way through explaining what he's doing, we will finish off with a group of "friends" enjoying the meal together on the nicely set table outside just behind the chefs work area.
This will be shot in the final week of April and beginning of May (29/04/13 – 05/05/13), because it would need to be a warm. It will be a five hour shoot, which includes setting it all up, rehearsing and shooting. To ensure we get great shots, we’ve enlisted the help of several classmates that have great experience in camera operating. The piece will be shot on four high end Canon DSLRs, to ensure that not a single angle is left out.

Why funding is needed?

The money raised will cover the filming, the equipment needed and the groceries. The costs will include:
·         Paying the chef for participating
·         Buying local produce from local butchers
·         Buying two workbenches for the chef to work on
·         To produce DVDs and Blu-Ray of the finished piece
·         Travel expenses to and from location on shoot day
·         Buying local Welsh daffodils to decorate the location
·         To making sure that you that contribute get the finished piece and updates
·         About 15% will go to get the contribution perks out to you

If the target of £290 is exceeded, the surplus fund will be donated to Discovery Charity, a local charity based at Swansea University that help to improve the local community.
The budget can be downloaded from HERE.

Why fund this?

By helping us reach our target we will be able to make a 15 minute film, which help promote healthy cooking. Teaching simple and healthy cooking skills is really important in todays Britain where obesity is rising rapidly. This episode could also lead to a full series, that will benefit many people. The piece will also be submitted to various competitions and festivals, which will showcase great contributors like yourself.

What else can you do?

We truly appreciate any contribution you can make, big or small. One way of doing that is sharing this with friends and family on social networks.
Also if you have any equipment that you think we made use, like workbenches, nice summer style plates or even a pot of daffodils, that will be much appreciated.
Please don’t forget the perks connected with this campaign. If you look to the right of your screen, you can see a number of perks you can have as a contributor.

_____

I have finally started shooting for the Discovery infomercial  A few days ago I was at Age Exchange, which is a local charity cafè where they host weekly get-togethers for senior citizens. Here they can chat, play bingo, have a cuppa and more. I put together some RUSHES from the shoot. Keep in mind none of the shots have been colourcorrected and the external sound has not been added. This is only meant as a progress report for the blog.

The dates for the rest of the shoots have now been set. Shooting will commence after Easter, so stay tuned!

CV

---

I've decided to design my CV. Yes, that's right; design my CV. Normally people have the standard black & white thing, with Curriculum Vitae in bold or italic on the top. If you're lucky you might even see a bold, italic and underlined headline. Everyone has got one, they all pretty much look the same. In the recent years individuality has been a way to for people to stand out in the crowd, or rather the pile on the managers desk. Okay individuality, check.

Here I started to think at what I would look for if I was the one hiring. Often CVs can be full of mumbo jumbo just to make it be two pages and so much doublespace you could fit a house inbetween the lines. So I started thinking of designs which would let me compress my CV into one page, leaving the other free for a potential cover letter OR a list of films I have worked on.

So from here I wrote down some keywords:

  • Individual, but not too crazy
  • Clean
  • Colour
  • Minimalistic
From those words I came up with a sketch

Dissertation done

Dissertation is now done and dusted!

"Topic outline
This dissertation will examine how a film can be classed as a documentary and what it is perceived to be.

  1. The first chapter will aim to define the documentary genre.
  2. The second chapter will look at how this can be applies to Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11.
  3. The third chapter will look at how the film is received and will end in a discussion, connecting all three chapters.
Bill Nichols’s Introduction to Documentary and Representing Reality will be essential to this dissertation. The interest in this topic comes from a personal passion for documentary film and is very much relevant to my desired career path."

Discovery charity infomercial newsletter

Because I broke my leg, I had to cancel the shoot for both my films and I can't schedule new specific dates since I can't start before I've got the green light from my physiotherapist. Still, I have done some planning. I have sent out a newsletter to all the volunteers for my Discovery film.

Newsletter:

About

My name is Tom-Daniel Laugerud and I’m a film student at Swansea Metropolitan. Some of you might know me from the Discovery projects “Circus eruption” and “Kids away”.
As part of my degree, I have to produce two films, one external and one personal. I would like to make an infomercial for Discovery Charity, which could be used to recruit new volunteers, get funding and more. And I need your help! Carry on reading to see how.
·         Infomercial – is the non-profit equivalent of a Commercial. There is not a profit goal.

The idea

As we all know, Discovery is made up by a large group of incredible volunteers (and staff members), who dedicate their time to helping others. Discovery volunteers also come from all over the world and from all walks of life. I would like to showcase that.
Also Discovery has a wide variety of projects, everything from working with vulnerable children and refugees to growing vegetables on the farm.  This would be nice to showcase.

Storyline
1.       We start with 10-20 seconds of general shots of the different Discovery projects
2.       We see a 10 seconds clip from an project where a volunteer is working.
3.       We cut to a close up of the volunteer where he/she says “I’m a discoverer”
2. and 3. Is the repeated five times, BUT in different languages. English and Welsh are of course given, but also try to show other languages like Chinese, Indian, Spanish, Norwegian and many more.
4.       After having repeated 2. and 3. five times, we cut to a shot of all the volunteers/staff. This is shot high up, from the top a building for example. As the camera is zooming out, the whole group shouts “WE ARE DISCOVERY!”
As one we are “discoverers” but together we are Discovery (and we are stronger). That’s the basic idea. In the background, there will be the appropriate music. The total running time for this infomercial would be no more than 2 minutes.

Questions?

How much time will this take? Where will it be shot?
That’s the great thing. I will be travelling round to all the amazing Discovery projects to film YOU. So basically if you volunteer for a children’s projects and that’s on a Tuesday, I will be there that Tuesday. As for the time it would take; no more than 15 minutes. The goal is to shoot in March and present the finished product at the end of April.

What’s in it for me?
You will be helping Discovery grow, which will allow us to do even more amazing work.

Where will this be shown?
Discovery is free to use this to get more voluteers to join Discovery. So this means volunteer fayres, on the Discovery website and similar places.

So if you can speak a different language, volunteer for Discovery and got 15 minutes; I would love to hear from you!
If you are interested or have any questions, please email me at xxx.

Kind regards,

Tom-Daniel Laugerud

More dissertation

Leg update: Leg improving, but still on bed-rest.

As mentioned before, my main focus in February has been on my dissertation (bachelor paper).

Currently I'm in the process researching for my dissertation, Fahrenheit 9/11 - True documentary or just manipulation. Basically I'm analyzing Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 and trying to categorize it according to Bill Nichols documentary theory.

Sorry about the short post.
