Timelapse: Stars

I tried to do a short timelapse of the stars yesterday.

Settings
Camera: Canon 7D

Exp.: 29sec
Interval: 5 sec
Aperture: f/3.5
ISO: 160
Focal length: 18mm
WB: Auto

160 pictures

I simply forgot to set the White Balance to manual, which is why you can see flickrs from time to time. Also need to be better at getting the focus right. But then I've learned from that and can do a better job next time.

I read Timothy Allans blog, a great BBC photographer who worked on the Human Planet series. He did a great post about timelapse and specifically told about star timelapse. Check it out her --> BBC blog

New film "Running Scared"

The result of the Advertising and Video collaboration project.

We started the project in the beginning of November with the advertising student pitching their ideas to us. The "scenario" was that the advertising student were our clients, hiring us to make a commercial for them. The project brief said to create a viral for a smart phone. iPhone 4S, with focus on the new app SIRI, was chosen. We worked closely together to develop the idea and prepare for shooting. My role was as Producer for this piece.

"A film producer oversees and delivers a film project to all relevant parties while preserving the integrity, voice and vision of the film. They will also often take on some financial risk by using their own money, especially during the pre-production period, before a film is fully financed.

The producer is often actively involved throughout all major phases of the filmmaking process, from inception and development to completion and delivery of a film project. However, an idea or concept for a film can originate with any individual, including a screenwriter, a director or a producer."

Like it says, my responsibility was to ensure we stayed on track. I also obtained and filled out all contracts, model releases, location aggreements etc. I really enjoyed the role as producer, cause I got to work with all the amazing in the different "departments". Even though it's a small student production, everyone still got their roles. One has got a hand in everything, overseeing the whole process.

New job: Photographer for Swansea Student Events

I've started my new job now, for Student Swansea Events. Working as a promoter and photographer (film mainly). We had our first "trial" evening on Wednesday the 19th of October at Fuzzylogic (Oceana).

For now I'm working in the Monday team, promoting the concept iLoveMondays. Today I've been visiting Illustration course to tell the student about the Halloween flyer competition. Basically we want them to design a flyer within 36 hours. Can it be done?

I submitting a design proposal to, which I'm making later tonight/tomorrow.

Meaning to life

Every Thursday I've got a four philosophy seminar/lecture. I like philosophy, it makes you think of the world differently. This is a response I've written to one of the topics we had today (13/10/2011).
_____________________________________________________________

What is the meaning of life?

This is a question philosophers and people have asked themselves from dawn of time. It's in the very nature of humans to question the world around them. What's the point? Why should I iron that shirt? Why should I go to uni? Why should I bother getting out of bed in the morning?
Matrix - Red: Disconnect from Matrix Blue: Stay put - Source: Warner Bros Inc.
Is reality fundamentally one or is it many? That is a question that has been asked many times. Take the Matrix films. The theory of the world most humans grow up in is computer generated and exist only as part of clever programming. And that the real world is outside this. But then again, what determines what is real and what is not?

I would say the fact that I can see the world, that I can smell the different smells, that I can hear the sounds around. Basically the five senses. But when one dreams, doesn't one see, smell and hear too? What is there to say that the dream is a dream? Maybe the real world is a dream and the dream the real world.
Source: Reellifewisdom.com
We make a choice and either accept it or not. Simple as that. Humans base their choices on logic, moral and ethics. Most of us has the same "moral-code", but then you have the people that have a different view. Are they wrong or are we wrong? We classify someone mentally ill when their minds are much different from the general public. But think of this, the mentally ill will sometimes say they are sane and that in fact "we" are the crazy ones. The perception of reality is subjective.

Back to my original question; What is the meaning of life?
Is it to become rich and buy the newest Audi? Or is to be happy and live life?
This is also something that is subjective. My meaning and plans are different from my friends, if not much, then in some degree.

Meaning with life to me is to be happy, live life, make a difference and be remembered. I chose this reality and accept it, even though it may give you a hard time some times. I wish to make my mark on the world, even if the mark is tiny. If I can help someone or make something that change something and/or someone, I get happy. Yes life is hard and I make bad choices all the time, but I also make good choices. This goes for all of us, in some degree or another.

"Live the life you love, so you can love the life you live."

Don't give up and stay put, it get's better. Sometimes the light in the end of that tunnel might seem so far away or it could be all black. If ever I felt lost, the great and amazing people around me turned on the light.

A great music video, with a stopmotion effect.

Photographer for band

Right now I'm volunteering for the SMU student union, METSU. In addition to general work, I do photos and films for them. Last night it was Live Lounge, where several bands performed. I took some good photos and clips of a new band, The Reservoir Wolves. I showed it to the group and they seemed to like them, so I gave them my contact details and they gave me theirs.

They said they'd let me know when the got gigs in the area, cause then I could come and take photos. I don't earn anything on doing this yet, but in return I get my name on the photos. So all PR is good PR. After Christmas I got a project where one option is to make a music video, so we agreed on that we might work together on that. They said that this was exactly something they needed.

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHED

My new website is now done. Check it out at tomdaniellaugerud.com or tomdaniel.eu. I still haven't a 100% decided with what domain to go with. I used the Wix editor to create my site, cause the little web coding I know won't get me that far. I can do some basic stuff here and there, but that's about it. If you're wondering why I have two domains, it's because I got tomdaniellaugerud.com free through Wix, simple as that.

In mid June, actually at Gatwick Airport in the VHSmith, I spotted a magazine "Computer arts projects". On the front was the title "Improve your digital portfolio". This issue contained loads of tips on how to show off yourself and your work and how crucial that is in the creative industry. They'd interview people every branch on the industry, film, photo, design, art etc. If you get can a hold of a copy of this, do it, it's well worth the £7,50.

I've also started this "career blog", where I'm gonna post updates on project, inspirations etc. For me it's really important to separate my "private life" from my "job-life". It's not everything a future boss needs to see and vice versa. Also then I use that as a online journal, not just for myself, but also to use in uni where we have to do a "visual diary" of the year.

As a "mini-blog" I've set up a twitter account, so follow me @tomdaniel_blog. If I'm working on a project I can post short updates which will then appear on my blog.

Next step:
- I'm soon starting working on my Facebook page, hoping to have that online within August
- Business cards

Please give me feedback, would love to hear your thoughts.

TIME LAPSE ABERTAWE

My newest / old film. A time lapse of Swansea, which I started in February 2011 and countiniued working on until late April. In May some university projects came up, so this project was put on hold. But today I did the finishing touches and uploaded it.

I wanted to experiment and learn more about time lapse. The raw material is composed of 2330 still pictures, shot on my Canon EOS 400D, which then is imported into After Effects as jpg-sequences. In AE I adjusted the size of the pictures and also some brightness/exposure correction on shots with changing lighting (f. ex. inside Quadrant)

I'm not 100% happy with it, cause there is some shakes, over-exposed parts etc. BUT I learned very much from this project. I learned about what different frame rates does, where I used the wrong settings etc. When taking pictures of people I discovered after that it would have been wiser to have shutter speed set to between 1/15 and 1" and have short intervals. This is to avoid them showing as "blips" on screen. So I hope to deliver an even better product next time.

As Timothy Allen, an amazing BBC photographer (still & moving), said about time lapse:
"Experience will be your best teacher here and as you practise you will discover what works best for you."

If you didn't know it, Timothy Allen is one of the photographers behind BBC's amazing Human Planet. Which has some of the best shots I've seen in documentaries ever. Real absolute beauty. He is one my favorite photographers in the world.
