Christmas break

Top left: the "Christmas-tree-party" in the village I'm from
Bottom left: From the ski lift at Kongsberg skicentre
Right side: Christmas tree decorations

First of all, Merry Christmas to you all. I hope you're having a great wherever you are. I'm in Norway for the holidays, a true winter wonderland I can a sure you!

Since I'm only home in Norway for three weeks, I've decided to mainly focus on family and friends, afterall that's what Christmas is all about. To avoid having to drag hard drives, laptops etc. with me, I decided to only work on my promotion and marketing. So besides friends, family, dinners and presents, my Christmas has so far been updating my website, social media sites and CV, all of which can be found on my website:

Yet again, MERRY CHRISTMAS! (Or GOD JUL in Norwegian)

Designs for Funky Pump White Collar Boxing DVD

The designs for the Funky Pump White Collar Boxing DVD:

(C) Tom-Daniel Laugerud / TDL Media 2012-2013
The design will be sent off to the printers next week. Right now I'm just finishing the small details on the DVD menu and making sure all links are okay (links - you press "Chapter 1" and that you actually get to chapter 1). I'm still using the same company to print and copy my DVDs, VPOnline. They always deliver a great product and has never let me down so far. I have to send in the master disc by next week, so that they can duplicate it.

Funky Pump boxing shoot

The shoot on yesterday (Tuesday 13th) went alright actually. I'd hired Johan P. Kraugerud and Iain Rose to work as camera operators. Also hired Stine Kiran to take still pictures I could use for the DVD cover.
We (camera operators) each took up a position in Oceana. Johan did mostly handheld and close ups, Iain did wide shots from the balcony above and I did wide shots and close ups from ground level. We got some great shots, so hopefully it will be okay.

What could have better:

  • We were under the impression that there would be a 20 minute break between first and second half, but it was only 10 minutes. So this made transferring, putting batteries on charge etc. a bit more challenging. So next time I would have hired a runner to go back and forth between the cameras and laptop.
  • Also I would have like to have had one more camera, to get even more angles.
  • Maybe try having intercom of some sorts next time?
(C) Photographer Stine Kiran and TDL Media (Tom-Daniel Laugerud) 2012

I have to have it all done and delivered to Funky Pump by the 25th of November, so that leaves me 12 days to go through 9 hours of footage, edit, export and finish the Master disc*, so this will indeed be a fun challenge. (* I have already pre-made the rough template of the menu, so it's just a matter of filling in all the details, pictures, files etc.)

Keep you posted!

Funky Pump Fitness

I've been hired to produce a DVD of the Funky Pump White Collar boxing event in Oceana Swansea. Funky Pump is a local gym chain based here in South Wales, with centres in Swansea, Port Talbot, Cardiff and many more.

It will be a multi-camera production with three cameras. I'm also designing all the graphics for it (DVD cover, DVD menu, titles etc.). The finished product will be between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on how long each fight goes on.

Stay tuned!

Sunday 30 September 2012

Third year of university

It's my third and final year, so I need to use all my energy and focus to get through this.

Uni work:

  • Films - Make two films, external and personal, with a maximum total running time of 15 minutes on both films. So for example a 4 minute music video and a 11 minute documentary would be one way of doing it.
  • Dissertation (Bachelor paper) - 8000 word dissertation on my chosen topic.
  • Visual diary - An electronic diary of the entire year of what I've been up to basically
  • Marketing and self promotion - Basically here you have to figure out how you will present and market yourself.
That is the four big points basically, in addition to normal lectures/seminars and non-uni work.

For my films I've a few ideas, but nothing I want to share just yet, sorry. They will be revealed in due course.

As for my dissertation it is still about documentary and I'm continuing my research next week. So my new address will be the campus library for the next few months. The dissertation deadline in the 8th of March, but we have 3000 and 5000 word deadline throughout the year.

My visual diary is an ongoing project, which I pretty much "automatically" work on. Just by me typing these words I'm working on it. Basically you put in everything that's got anything to do with you degree. So all my sketches, drafts, storyboards, inspirations etc. will go in there.

The marketing and self promotion module is probably the one module I'm most relaxed about, seeing as 90% of it is already done. I've got a CV (online and paper), Facebok page, Twitter account, website, business cards and I work as self employed. For this one I just need to gather all the things into a folder, to show what I've got.

So that's my year. Fingers crossed it will be fine.

Hello UK, I'm back

Currently I'm sat at Gardemoen Airport in Oslo (Norway) writing this. Summer is over and it's time to return back to university and to UK. I'm now entering my third and final year at Swansea Metropolitan University. It's almost a bit scary, final year and everything. The plan for this year is to make two film for university and work on other projects on the side. I've got a few ideas for the two films, but for the first few months my dissertation needs to be my main focus.

Stay tuned!

Dissertation progress

As I set up in my summerplan post in May, one of the things I was going to work on over the summer was my dissertation. Since my dissertation proposal, I've changed my dissertation completely. After feedback from my dissertation supervisor, I chose to change the topic to something that's more relevant to my degree and interests: Documentary

For now it's on the research stage, since the books I brought over are of no use now seeing as they were inteded for the first dissertation topic. However, I will be researching the topic online and see what I can find. I have been thinking of looking into the Arab spring and citizen journalism. As part of that I've ordered the book Karama! Journeys through the Arab Spring by Johnny West from Amazon.

Skeive Dager done 'n dusted

Skeive Dager 2012 (Oslo Pride Days 2012) is now finished and it was absolutely amazing. I met and got to work with some really great people. Like I described in the post in May (Videographer for...), I would be working every day of the festival, making daily videos that would go up on the YouTube channel. In addition I had to administrate and design the channel (see design below).

Screenshot of the Skeive Dager YouTube channel. Access it HERE.
These videos were shot in the day and were uploaded by the next morning (I set 10:00 AM as my deadline).  The first video got over 1500 views within the first 12 hours. The idea was to upload daily videos that would be promoted and shown on the festivals main website during it and it was a great success. One of the biggest highlight was probably meeting and interviewing the HĆøyre (Conservative Party) leader, Erna Solberg.

Here are all the ten films I made (all in Norwegian, except one):

Summer holidays

The summer holiday is coming and it's time for me to head back to Norway for the holidays. It's actually quite weird, living two places (almost). It's like you've got two lives. One in Norway, one in UK. Anyway, I've sat down just to draw up a rough list of my "Summerplan" of what I need to work on / what I'm doing over the summer.

Summerplan
  • Work full time in the grocery store (worked here since I was 15). Save up the money
  • Work as camera operator and editor, making films for Skeive Dager 2012 festival (Oslo Pride Days 2012)
  • Research dissertation
  • Live life
I know it might not seem as much, but I'll be working 06:30 - 15:00 Monday to Friday, then home to do dissertation and try to squeeze in friends and family. So that is the right amount I'd say.

Summer Ball done

That is Summer Ball done and it was a great success (except for the weather). The students absolutely loved it!

Like I descibed last week, I was aiming for having having three more crew members. I got Iain Rose, Johan P. Kraugerud and Eoin McLoughlin to work as camera operator, all of which have a good experience withing film production.

Here you can see the final results. ENJOY!

Dissertation proposal

UPDATE: Final topic changed, after feedback from dissertation supervisor. New topic: documentary.
______________________________________

My dissertation proposal is now submitted.

Main topic:

How are religion, philosophy and mythology used in the works of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien?

Key words:
•             Philosophy
•             Religion
•             Mythology
•             Childhood
•             Adaption

The aim of this dissertation is to question and explore how religion, philosophy and mythology is used on a conscious level in fantasy literature and film. I would like to argue that behind the greatest literary works and films are a deep meaning.

I intend to take a deeper look into the great works of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, more specifically The Narnia Chronicles and The Lord of Rings, discovering the philosophical and religious elements. Both authors were in “the Inklings”, a literary discussion group associated with University of Oxford in England. I’m very much passionate about fantasy literature because when I was growing up as a child the stories helped me expand my imagination and I firmly believe that the values taught in the books are values that can be applied in real life. I believe this so much that last I had the lion Aslan from the Narnia Chronicles tattooed on my left leg.

Summer Ball prep

Throughout the year I work for Student Swansea Events, making short (1 minute 30 seconds) long promotional films. Most of these are based in the clubs.

Now, it's time for the annual Swansea Students Summer Ball 2012. It's still a week left, but I'm busy planning this. I'm in charge of getting crew to come along and film it. So far I've managed to get two people and hoping for one more. Our job is to film the whole event and edit out a film, including artist performances  interviews and more. It's not meant to be so much an "arty-style" film, but more standard TV.

The finalƩ of the academic year returns as Abbey Meadow is transformed into the scene of Wales' biggest garden party on the day when the nation celebrates the Jubilee Bank Holiday.
Students celebrate their first, second, third or maybe fourth year in Swansea at the biggest and best event of the year; The Summer Ball.

IGNITE Show done

This show went great, amazing performers (considering they are all doing this as a hobby)!

The shoot went OK. Taeliesin theatre was being a bit difficult when it came to allowing us to position our cameras. Mostly they kept going on about Health and Safety, which is of course important, but the reasons they were using sounded a bit thin, in my opinion.

Laura France and Iain Rose were the two other camera operators in addition to myself. Right now, I'm in the final part of editing, just fine tuning. Hoping to be done and dusted in not too long The DVD cover and disc design is done, which will be printed by a company up in Scotland (VP Online) which the company I use for all my prints:
(C) Tom-Daniel Laugerud and TDL Media 2012 - 2013

(C) Tom-Daniel Laugerud and TDL Media 2012 - 2013

So what could have been done better? I should have hired an runner that could empty out the cards, charge batteries etc. instead of us having to do that in between performances. So next time I get a similar job, I'll try to remember this.

University project - Bromoil

Assessment
Pre-production – Planing and research
It was initially my Co-Producer, Angella Wang, that introduced me to this art and to Derek Ashman (the photographer). Angella and me sat down and started brainstorming on what kind of documentary we wanted and topics we wanted to cover. Because of the short running time (3 to 5 minutes) the finished product needed to have, we were very conscious on the fact that we needed to cover the whole process on a basic level. I sat down with Derek and asked him about his thoughts and how long it normally took him to make a print. When he said he normally uses a month on a set of print, my heart jumped I have to admit, but after he said the whole process would take less I calmed more down. He suggested that we do a dry run up to the bleach point. Meaning that he would prepare the image for inking. To get to this stage, the image have to go through several chemical baths and dry between each, but the inking process itself (which is what you see) only takes about half an hour.

Production – Shoot itself
With the research we had done in advance in mind, we went to Derek’s house and his workshop in the attic. The place itself had sufficient lighting which was a relief to me. Prior to the shoot I had sat down with Derek and explained how I wished to do this. I explained I wanted almost the camera to do the interview, meaning that my voice would not be present and that when I did ask questions, that he could answer in such a manner that included the question. After trying out different angles and framing, I found a total shot I was happy with. He had rehearsed a “speech” which wasn’t ideal, but after the first take, I asked him if he could try to explain it more in his words. And boy does this man talk. I remember standing there dreading the editing process because of his talkative nature. After each stage I would move in and do close ups of the tools he had used. During the whole shoot I made sure I took notes of what he was doing and close ups shots I got get afterwards. I left the audio running regardless of when I stopped the camera.

Post production – Editing
Having over 30 minutes of footage and the same for audio, I was a bit worried about how to compress this down to 5 minutes including credits. To my relief, Truls Telle (classmate), showed me a syncing program to go with Avid Media Composer called PluralEyes. Basically what it does is to sync the in-camera sound with external recorded sound. This couldn’t have been more god given for this project! I put all the clips and external recorded audio into the timeline in Media Composer and exported the timeline as a .aaf file. Then imported that in PluralEyes and volĆ . It synced up my audio in a matter of seconds. This saved me a lot of time. Then the process of cutting it down started. Sturgeon’s law is an adage commonly cited as “ninety present of everything is crud” or “ninety present of everything is crap”. I’ve learned that it’s better to have too much than too little when it comes to footage.
Because he took a fair while to come to the point on the essence of the process, I chose to re-record a few seconds of sound later. What originally was over 1 minute of talk explaining the process, I got down to a few seconds. With the software Audacity I mixed the re-record sound with the room sound from the first shoot. My goal was to mix to the best of my abilities to create the impression that the audio was the same.

Overall
Does the finished product reflect the original thoughts I had for the film? Yeah more or less. I’m happy with the close ups I got. I wish that the audio I re-recorded could have resembled the original audio more, but I did my best. In a perfect world I would have liked to have gone back to his workshop and recorded the audio, to get the exact same sound, but mine and his schedule clashed.
Also if I were to do this film again I would have got more cut aways and also made sure I kept the tripod still for the total/master shot. So if I had a second chance I wound have brought a second tripod, leaving the first tripod in the same position the whole time.

B2 - Assessment

Major Studies B2 – Studio project
Assessment

Pre-production – Planning and research
We started knowing that as a group we would function very well. We all have similar work ethics and standards, but at the same time can bring individual strengths to the project. At an early stage we sat down and brainstormed on ideas. We said that we should present some ideas on the table and take it from there. All of us fell in love with Johan’s idea straight away. It was good, had a twist and seemed like a good challenge. We set about dividing roles:
  • Director – Johan Peter Kraugerud
  • Producer – Tom-Daniel Laugerud
  • DOP – Laura France
  • Art Department – Lauran Belcher
  • Sound Department – Iain Rose
As soon as Johan had finished the script, we sat down and started to review it and tweak it. It ended being five versions, with the feedback from Chris Buxton and Timi O’Neil on the script. After that I started breaking it down into pieces, assigning important keyword to each department, so that Art Department for example could start planning. Laura, Johan and me met up and started devising a shot list. When that was done, I started breaking it down into a shooting schedule that seemed logical. Soon as the script was done I set about putting a advertisement on Star Now (casting website).  I got a few replies and found several good candidates that we had seen preform in other productions. We said we’d pay travel expenses and food.
Closing in on the shoot days, Art Department needed some assistance since this turned out to need a lot of props and set dressing. Laura and Lauran went out on prop shopping and came back with loads. We booked the studio for five days, because we believed that it would take a fair share of setting it all up. And boy was we right. We got a massive help from Lauran’s dad Gary, who helped with building the set and Laura’s boyfriend Luke who was kind enough to acquire the flooring we needed. Also several of our classmates came in to help us strip down the five layers of paint that was on the studio walls from earlier productions. We had to use over two layer of white primer before two coats of the bedroom colour, coffee. Our “wooden” flooring from Poundland went down with little frustration, except from a couple of nice words. The wardrobe and bedside table was borrowed from our house, seeing as we had all matching furniture. Lauran did a great job designing the set. All of us put a lot of hours into this set, working 12 hours every day. I would especially like to thank our classmate Brych Rees who came to help every single day, even though it wasn’t even his project. We were lucky to have such great friends to help us.
When it came to doing the new set for the police interrogation room, the foundation was already set, so it went a lot quicker compared to the bedroom. I designed some posters to go on the board behind the suspect. Went on South Wales Police website and found some press releases and took the logo from there and volĆ . We even went as far as to fitting light switches and power sockets in the wall to make it look authentic.

Production
We started off with the bedroom set first. Our friends Dan Short and Henry Smith had volunteered to play the role as forensics. And mine and Johan’s housemate, Ieva, had agreed to play the dead victim. Again here, Lauran Belcher did a great job dressing the set. Truls Telle helped out in the control room together with Johan. Whilst me and Laura was in the studio itself. I managed the schedule and made sure we weren’t too far off and Laura made the shots happen. She would say “Tom I need that extra shot” and I would answer “Fine, but you got 15 minutes”. So there we would stand and “bargin” on time. After a long day of shooting, we called it a day and prepared for a new set. We had two first years, Samuel Hinton and Matt Gaze, as runners on both days. Sam was my assistant during the shoot, marking the shots and helping Laura with the cameras.
Like I mentioned, we found our actors on Star Now, Darren Swain and Neil Fowles. The lover was supposed to be played by a student with drama experience, but he decided not to show and a backup plan had to be devised. The group member Iain Rose, had some experience from drama productions before, so he took on the responsibility to play the lover. And did a good job I must say. Before the shoot I had made sure we had enough refreshments and fruits and for lunch we took our actors to Subway. We went a bit over schedule with a couple of hours, but the actors said it was fine and we finished happy, but tired.
On the last studio day, Friday, we all came in to take it all down and make sure it was all clean and ready to go for the next student to use it.

Post-production
It was decided that Johan was to edit the film and Iain to find sounds. I was set to handle “publicity”, meaning DVD orders. I also handled the expenses and the settlement of that. We budgeted £50 each and ended using £260.65, which quite reasonable. Johan had a very hard time fitting the whole film into five minutes, so we will have an extended version for online use.

Overall
Am I happy with the final product? Yes indeed. I feel we accomplished what we set out to do. We had some trouble with the studio cameras, but we managed to work around those. The DVD cover and disc looks great. I made sure the order was sent so that we’d get all in time. I feel that as colleagues and also as friends, we have all become closer. We now know even better each other strength and weaknesses.
Again thanks to all our volunteers that helped out, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Videographer for Skeive Dager (Oslo Pride days)

Summer is coming up and I'm starting to look at any work experience I can get during the summer. I've got in touch with Skeive Dager (Oslo Pride Days) and been taken on as a videographer. This is an annual event, which all major cities in the Western world has, to celebrate and promote the diversity in our society. I attended the parade in 2011 and though it was quite fun, so thought why not volunteer? I will be working every day of the festival, making daily videos that go up online (YouTube). I also will have to design the YouTube channel and make sure the information on it is relevant.

Friday 27 April 2012

Start of the IGNITE show

Later today is the Swansea University Dance Society IGNITE show, which I've been hired to produce a 1.5 hour long DVD of. The plan is have three camera operators, strategically positioned around the Taeliesin theatre. The show aims to raise money for charities working with people with down syndrome.

A2 - Second shoot

Back after Easter now. I phoned up Derek to arrenge for us to go out and pick up some cutaway shot of him actually taking the picture. We went to the old stone church up in Sketty, St Pauls. You see the original print which he made is from a church far up in North Wales, but the one in Sketty similar enough. I got one possible ending shot which might be used as like a merge from the video to the still, but don't know how that's going to look yet. We'll see.

Easter time

Sorry for not updating in a while now. I have been busy working with projects and essays and right now I'm in Norway on Easter break.

I promise you'll get an update within a week on my projects.

In the meantime, check out how you can stay inspired:

Timelapse - Italy

Sunset time lapse from Italy, February 2012.

I shot this the first afternoon I was in Italy now. So beautiful view from there!

Right now I'm doing the finishing touches on the product, so you will get to see it soon. It just takes some extra time, me going back to Norway for the holidays AND it being Easter break.

But you will see it soon.

Have a great Easter!

A2 - First shooting day

Brushes

We went to Derek Ashmans house today to do the shoot. He's got a workshop up in the attic containing all his tools for processing and inking. The shoot went good, though he did talk a lot, so I'm a bit affraid when it comes to editing that I'll have a handfull editing it down, but fingers crossed. It's so great of him to take time to do all this. Hopefully now I'll get to do a rough edit over Easter.

B2 - Building a set

We finished our shoot for the university project "Studio" on Tuesday. The project is to use the TV studio and only the TV studio and controlroom to film it. So for this project we're building two sets, a bedroom (above) and a police interview room. We laid in flooring, painted the walls, full furniture (bed, tables, wardrobe, draw etc.)

Today (Wednesday) we repainted and decorated it for the interview room.

We talked to a UK police detective to get info on what would realistically to find in an real interview room. Through Star Now we found two actors to play the main roles.

We have had so much fun and I have personally learned loads working as a Producer for this film.

Stay tuned for more.

B2 - Schedules

I've finished the Crime of Passion shooting schedule now, so all good to go! After Laura, Johan and me did the shot list, I started breaking it down on Genie (scheduling software). I really like that, simple to use, shame it's not being updated/developed any more...

Italy trip

I went to Italy to work for Discover the World. My job is to create a promo video, 10 to 15 min, about their school trip program. Other film students were picked to go to Iceland and Jordan. So over the next month I'll be working hard with this project, amongst other work.

There I followed a lovely bunch from Wirral Grammel School - A Business & Enterprise School for Boys. VERY polite boys, all Sir and Miss. I got to see Pompeii, the island Capri, Napoli, Sorrento and much more. It was really amazing to see Pompeii and the "live-frozen-people". It really shows the destructive power of Mother nature. I can now also say I've been IN an volcano. We wet to a dormant volcano and walked around on the top.

There you see the volcano Vesuvius. We were supposed to go up there, but there were too much snow.

Now I'm working my way through over 7 hours of footage which has to be edited down to 10-13 minutes and finished by 20/03/12. So loads to do.

B2 - Actors

Star Now: http://www.starnow.co.uk/Casting-Calls/Actors-wanted/Short-film/short_film_crime_of_passion.htm

We were looking for three males, an inspector, a love and a husband. We've gotten several promising applications, some of which already have acted in other SMU productions, which is good. Next thing now is for me to meet them and discus all the details.

(For Moodle blog, add details on actors)

SSE iLoveMondays video + Uni projects

This is the video I did on Monday for Student Swansea Events. We had the Ministry of Sound UNItrash TOUR ft ARTWORK (Magentic Man) performing on iLoveMondays in Oceana, Swansea's biggest night club. I think this might be one of the best SSE videos I've made so far.

Besides that, we're working really with our studio project, which I'm doing with Johan, Laura, Lauran and Iain. A great gang that knows what hard work is. At the moment we're are putting up the budgets for the different departments. We're building two massive sets in the studio, almost wish the studio was bigger. I can't tell you much about it, cause we've agreed to keep it a secret. BUT I can tell you this; a woman has been found murdered in her own home and we see the police investigating the case, questioning several suspects.

At the moment I got two documentary ideas/projects, but I'm very much leaning towards one. Check out my "hint". I'll keep you posted when I've made some agreements.

My new job

So happy right now! I got offered the job as cinematographer with Discover the World. I am to go on a trip to Italy and make a 12-15 min documentary/promo video, following schools. The plan is to follow one school each day ;) They're covering all my expenses, so I'm thrilled beyond any human point at the moment.

Right now I'll use the next few days to brainstorm and create some suggestions to the company on what one could aim for.

I'll keep you posted.

Clifton Street

A documentar made for Cardiff Story Museum. It's a about Clifton street in Cardiff, a very different street. We see a selection of some of the shopkeepers there and their view. The finished piece is exhibited in Cardiff Story Museum (Old Library) from 12/01/2012 to 10/02/2012.

Experience
I found it quite exciting and fun to do. I got to experiment and get to know my Canon 7D even better, which only is a benefit. Having a documentary that I've worked on exhibited in a museum is an great honour. At the opening night I met a great deal of people, the BBC Producer for Being Human amongst others, and got to introduce myself.

Career

At the moment I'm about to apply to jobs, both in the UK and in Norway for the summer. I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished documentary of Clifton Street I worked on for Cardiff Story Museum in the old library. It's a 11 minute documentary that will be exhibited for 1 month in Cardiff Story Museum.

Other than that, I've just applied to a job as a cinematographer / videographer with an event company that does travels all over the world. I sent them my CV and an application, so really crossing my fingers that I'll hear from them. If I do get job, I get to go to Iceland and film, which would be amazing and just in the line of work I dream and aspire to do. Cross your fingers for me please.

Next to that I'm soon starting on my documentary film for the year long Student Led project. I'm working together with one of my friends, Angella, who's doing a Master degree in journalism over at Swansea University. We have a topic, but I'm not going to tell just yet, so you have to wait a few months first.

Also I'm doing a behind-the-scenes series for Lens Productions (3rd year student production company) on their new film All's fair together with fellow student Iain and first year student Sam. We'll start shooting  hopefully within a few weeks.

And I got some other bits and pieces coming up, but nothing is confirmed just yet. So also stay tuned on my NEW Facebook page. Please like -- > facebook.com/TDLmedia

Hopefully within two-three weeks I will have finished my showreel for 2011.

Packing and planning

Right now I'v been packing my bags since I'm leaving for Swansea tomorrow. All my cameraes, hardrives, laptop etc. neatly fitted into bags and back packs.

These clips I shot on my way back to Norway for Christmas. I've got a tradition were I take pictures/videos of the view outside (if possible).

Right now I'm working on several projects, both university and external projects. The documentary I worked as a camera operator on, is being exhibited in Cardiff Story from mid January.

Hopefully in the last couple of weeks in January you'll be able to see a copy of that AND of my "secret" project.
